Compassion

Let’s face it.  Everybody works hard.  To hear it told, you would think that teachers and fire fighters and other public employees spend their days with their feet up watching tv and eating bonbons.  (Hey, wait, isn’t that what stay at home moms do?)

If we are going to be honest, we all know that teachers work hard, just as do police and fire fighters.  As do stay at home moms.  And engineers, pilots, and sanitation employees.  We are all out here doing the very best that we can to make this life the best it can be.

What, then, is served by all the bait and attack that is being fostered in the media and in much of public discourse these days?  What is served?  Fear.  That is what is served.  Fear is being used to make people think that somehow they are getting short changed.  Fear is being used to pit human against human.  And behind the scenes, manipulators are rubbing their hands together watching.  They might even be making money from it.

It is obvious that we live on a planet full of lots of people with varying opinions on everything under the sun.  It is also obvious that compassion for our fellow human being is far from upper most on the minds of many.  It makes me sad.

I am teaching my children to respect people, to be compassionate, to help out someone in need.  I am teaching them that in order to respect themselves they must show that to others.  I am teaching them that love is the foundation of the universe.

With all the disrespecting going on in the world around them, I can only hope that they are able to get and hold onto that message.  It is hard.
